미국 루이지애나 주의 인구 3,000여 명의 작은 도시 켄트우드에서 태어나 1998년 말 데뷔 싱글 "...Baby One More Time"을 통해 정식으로 데뷔했다. 1999년 발매된 동명의 데뷔 앨범 《...Baby One More Time》은 미국에서만 1,400만 장이 넘게 팔려나갔으며, 전세계적으로 2,500만 장 이상 판매되었다. 2000년 제 42회 그래미 시상식 신인상에 후보로 올랐으나, 그 상은 그녀의 어릴 적 친구이자 그 당시에는 라이벌로 여겨졌던 크리스티나 아길레라(Christina Aguilera)에게로 돌아갔다.

이듬해 발매된 두 번째 앨범 《Oops!... I Did It Again》 역시 미국에서 1,000만 장 판매에 해당하는 다이아몬드 레코드를 기록했으며, 세계적으로도 2,100만 장 이상 판매되었다. 그로서 그녀는 가장 어린 나이에 가장 많은 음반을 판매한 아티스트로 기네스 북에 올랐으며, 이후 세 번째 앨범 《Britney》(2001)와 네 번째 앨범 《In the Zone》(2003)까지 네 장의 정규 앨범을 모두 빌보드 차트 1위에 데뷔시켜 미국 팝 역사상 여가수로는 최초의 기록을 세웠다. 3집 앨범은 총판 1,200만 장, 4집 앨범은 총판 800만 장으로 끊임없는 사랑을 받아왔다. 그후 문란한 길에 빠지며 이혼,약물중독.삭발,체중증가 등으로 그녀의 이미지 마케팅이 한참 부서져 있을 때 다섯 번째 정규 앨범 《Blackout》(2007)을 발매했는데, 각종 루머와 온갖 문란한 사생활로 인해 이미지가 큰 손상을 입었으며 VMA 공연과 뮤직 비디오 촬영 외에는 활동이 없었음에도 불구하고 첫 번째 싱글 "Gimme More" 는 빌보드 싱글 차트 3위, 《Blackout》은 빌보드 앨범 차트 2위를 차지하였다. 《Blackout》은 현재까지 전세계 약 200만 장의 판매고를 올렸다.
